Garbage Disposal Feeling Under The Weather? 3 Signs It's Time To Call The Plumber

Joann Gardner

You depend on your garbage disposal. When it's not working properly, you're left with a lot of extra work. Unfortunately, you might not realize that all the work your garbage disposal does for you can leave it feeling under the weather. When that happens, it may start acting up, which means you're going to be without it until you can get the plumber out to your house. Most minor problems can be taken care of by your plumber. However, you'll want to take care of the repairs as soon as possible. Otherwise, you could end up needing an entirely new garbage disposal. That's why it's important that you monitor the health of your garbage disposal. Here are three signs that it's time to call a plumber.

You've Got Water Under Your Sink

You might not realize this, but your garbage disposal has a couple of gaskets that are pretty important. One gasket seals the garbage disposal unit to your kitchen sink. The other gasket seals the disposal tank and prevents garbage and liquids from escaping from the bottom. You need both gaskets to be functioning properly. When they're not, you're going to have a problem with leaks. If you've got water under your sink, and it's not coming from the water fixtures, or the sink itself, you need to look at your garbage disposal. If it's leaking, you'll need to call your plumber as soon as possible. Those leaks are a sign that the gaskets are failing.

You've Got a Sluggish Kitchen Drain

When it comes to sluggish kitchen drains, many of the problems stem from the garbage disposal. This is particularly true if you use your garbage disposal on a daily basis. If your garbage disposal is not grinding up the food fine enough, you'll end up with a big mess on your hands. That's because the food remnants are going to linger in your pipes, which will lead to sluggish drains and stubborn clogs. If you've noticed that your kitchen sink is draining slowly, or you're needing to use the plunger more often, your garbage disposal might not be working right. It's time to call the plumber.

You've Got Jammed Disposal Blades

From time to time, your disposal blades may get jammed. When that happens, you should be able to work them loose with the end of your broomstick. You'll just need to stick the end of your broom in the drain and use it to move the disposal blades around. If that doesn't work to eliminate the jam, you'll need to try the reset switch under the garbage disposal. If both those efforts fail to alleviate the problem, you're going to your plumber to come out and take care of the problem.

About Me
Plumbing With A Purpose

When was the last time you realized that you had a serious plumbing problem? About a month ago, I knew that I had to make some big changes, so I began talking with different plumbers about getting the job done. I told them that I wanted to replace the bathtub in the bathroom and the sink and faucet in the kitchen, and they took my requests in stride. Before I knew it, my entire home was updated and I felt great about the work. I wanted to start this blog to help other people to learn more about plumbing and repair.
