3 Ways To Prevent Frozen Pipes In Your Vacation Home

Joann Gardner

A vacation property gives you the opportunity to travel to your favorite location without compromising the comfort and privacy of home. Due to the nature of vacation properties, your home away from home will probably stand vacant for long stretches of time.

It's important that you take the time to prepare the plumbing system in your vacation home for cold weather. The pipes in a vacant home are susceptible to freezing, but you can take action to prevent this type of plumbing disaster.

1. Keep Interior Doors Open

One of the easiest things you can do to prevent your pipes from freezing is open all interior doors before you leave your vacation home. When all doors are open, the home's heating system can function efficiently. Hot air can circulate throughout the living spaces in the vacation home to help keep interior pipes above freezing.

When combined with the right thermostat setting, open doors can be a valuable tool in protecting your vacation home against frozen pipes while the property is vacant this winter.

2. Repair Any Leaks

A leaking pipe can be a serious problem in a vacant vacation home. In addition to becoming a possible flood risk, leaking pipes can cause your plumbing to freeze up much quicker. The water leaking out of the damaged pipe will coat the exterior surface of the pipe. As temperatures drop inside the vacation home, this water freezes.

Ice can spread quickly across multiple pipes. Contact an experienced plumbing contractor to assess the condition of your vacation home's plumbing system before you leave the property vacant for any period of time. Any leaks that are  identified should be repaired immediately to help prevent frozen pipes in the future.

3. Insulate the Pipes

Another precaution you can take to ensure the pipes in your vacation home don't freeze while you are away is to have a plumber install insulation around each pipe. Specialized plumbing insulation helps to shield pipes against cold temperatures.

If your vacation home is located in an extreme climate, you can combine heated plumbing tape with insulation for added protection. Insulation will help ensure that the plumbing in your vacation home functions properly when you return to the property after a period of absence.

Caring for a vacation home can be challenging. Be sure that you are prepared to prevent the pipes in your vacation property from freezing while you are away from the home. Contact plumbing contractors for additional advice.

About Me
Plumbing With A Purpose

When was the last time you realized that you had a serious plumbing problem? About a month ago, I knew that I had to make some big changes, so I began talking with different plumbers about getting the job done. I told them that I wanted to replace the bathtub in the bathroom and the sink and faucet in the kitchen, and they took my requests in stride. Before I knew it, my entire home was updated and I felt great about the work. I wanted to start this blog to help other people to learn more about plumbing and repair.
